If you happen to have the disc version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and the new Xbox One X console, you can enjoy playing the game at up to 60 frames-per-second.
This is the only version of the The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt that can do that, since later patches locked the frame-rate to 30fps, or at least tried to. Thanks to the power of the Xbox One X, 60fps is possible, but not without some heavy caveats.
According to testing by NX Gamer, the launch version can hold a steady 60fps in many scenarios, but drops to the 40s in Novigrad – one of the more taxing environments. It does this because the resolution is locked to 900p.
However, switching to the most recent patch, which is not the 4K one, the frame-rate is once again back to 30fps. It’s locked for the most part, but obviously does not yet have support for resolutions higher than 1080p. The game’s PS4 Pro patch did increase the resolution, but brought back the nasty swamp frame-rate drops that had been finally fixed with the previous patch.
It’s an interesting situation, and certainly reminiscent of the Assassin’s Creed Unity launch version, which also had an unlocked frame-rate out of the gate before Ubisoft patched it to target 30fps instead. When the Xbox One X patch is released for The Witcher 3, it’s unlikely we’re going to see the return of unlocked frame-rate, but it sure is fun to speculate.
