Sometimes things don’t go as planned, and your shiny graphics card that you thought would max out Destiny 2 breaks and compromises have to be made.
This is what happened to Reddit user Ballisticshark, whose GTX 1080 died four hours into playing Destiny 2. Not wanting to be left behind in the glorious grind, he did the unthinkable and decided to use his CPU’s integrated GPU.
In this case, his CPU was the Intel 6700K overclocked to 4.8Ghz (via PCGamer), which means it has the meagre HD 530 GPU. In order to get it to run at an acceptable frame-rate, he dropped the resolution all the way to 720p. But it wasn’t enough, he had to upscale from a 45% internal resolution.
Even then, the best he could get was 30fps, and not when other players are around. Despite that, the game would occasionally stutter, but it didn’t stop him from getting all of his three characters to 300 Power, which is impressive. Ballisticshark captured a number of GIFs to try and show off the game’s most common scenarios.
Things like how the Tower, and the loading screen look, not to mention a couple of combat GIFs. Even at these low settings, Destiny 2 doesn’t look as bad as you’d think. Lighting and texture quality are down, but effects have a nice pop to them like they do when everything’s maxed out.
If you can forgive the low resolution, and the low frame-rate, it’s not an unacceptable look. He called it sort of a pixel art Destiny, which is fair.
In other, higher-res Destiny 2 news, Bungie had a lot to say about Curse of Osiris‘s new patrol space, story, the new raid content, the biggest Public Event yet and more.
