Persona 5 has sold 2 million copies worldwide, the highest sales in the series

The latest game in the Persona series has done very well for itself.

Atlus is reporting that the latest entry in their beloved dungeon-crawling RPG series has now topped 2 million sales worldwide, which is very good for a series that was, at one point, considered fairly niche.

Although we don’t have definitive sales stats on previous entries in the series, online estimates put Persona 5’s sales well above those of the previous games in the series. This bodes well for the Persona 5 dancing game that’s currently in the works.

The game performed very well early on, topping 1.5 million shipments back in April (having already released in Japan the previous year), but this is still a significant milestone.

The press release revealing these sales also contained a quote from Atlus USA president and CEO, Naoto Hiraoka:

This has been an incredible year for our company, one that represents our ambitions for Japanese games in the west. We are in the middle of experiencing tremendous growth, both in the west and abroad, and the sales of Persona 5 represent a new level of expectation for fans of the genre. Once seen as niche, Persona 5 is one of the most important titles this year, proving interest in this category is expanding. We look forward delivering more incredible games to our fans next year.

For what its worth, we thought Persona 5 was pretty excellent. It’s the last entry in the series from director Katsura Hashino, who is passing the series on to his successors.

The game is available on PS3 and PS4, making it one of the last major PS3 releases. Persona 6 is, we assume, still a long way away.
