Sony’s Simon Benson has said that 3D is going to be “gaming’s biggest revolution” of the modern age, and PS3 will be there to help usher it in.

Speaking in MCV‘s weekly magazine, the senior development manager believes that the tech could revolutionize gaming like Avatar did the theaters.

“The fact that we have a team dedicated to stereoscopic 3D gaming shows that we are taking this very seriously,” he said. “We believe that stereoscopic 3D is possibly going to be the biggest revolution in gaming for many years to come.

“If you think that the movie Avatar revolutionized cinema just wait to see what 3D games will do. We aim to lead the way wherever we can.”

This reflects comments made by SCEA’s John Koller last month when he said that “the amount of interest in 3D from the retail side and game publishers is off the charts” and added that there’s a “tremendous amount of opportunity” for PS3 with 3D.

Apparently so, because according to Sony, there’s quite a few first and third-party folks working on 3D gaming as we type.
