New video game releases for the week of May 15 to May 21.

    Thursday, May 17

  • Black & White Bushido (PS4)
  • Oceanhorn: Monster of Uncharted Seas (Vita)

Injustice 2 is this week’s big news. Presumably DC assumes recent movies will help drum up mainstream interest in the versus fighter outside the genre’s hardcore base, which may or may not work. Those who love NetherRealm’s fighters will be onboard no matter how many poor editing decisions the studio executives make, thankfully.

The Surge is the other biggie. Frequently described as a sort of science fiction Dark Souls, it’s being spoken of with reverence in some circles. Might go big; keep an eye out.

Otherwise, there are some big DLC drops. On PS4 Treyarch is throwing a special event to honour the early arrival of the Zombies Chronicles pack. For Honor players finally have reason to check back in now that there’s new content to enjoy.

In Nintendo land, look for a new Fire Emblem on 3DS and the glorious rhythm action violence of Thumper on Switch. Also Cooking Mama is back, having survived the collapse of Majesco.

You might want to take a look at Akiba’s Beat on PS4 and Vita this week. It’s the third full entry in a series that has quiet but fervent cult appeal. This one is a full RPG, so it leaves behind the Akiba’s Trip mechanics, but the story and setting continue.

Sony is very excited about releasing a gun controller for PSVR this week, along with a game that uses it – Farpoint. You have been advised. Honour is satisfied.

People keep trying very hard to make us care about Portal Knights but we’re more interested in Endless Space 2, to be honest. Anyway, that’s your lot, minus guff.

As always, PlayStation Store release dates may vary depending on region.
