Sonic Mania is looking like the game Sonic fans have been asking for all these years.
The game’s reviews are just beginning to drop, and it sounds like what Sonic Mania tried to do has been a success.
If you’re unfamiliar, Sonic Mania is created a by a team of fans lead by Christian Whitehead. The game is designed to look, and feel like a lost Sonic sequel. It builds on the designs set by the Sega Mega Drive games running on the more powerful Sega Saturn.
The result is something truly special, as our very own Alex Donaldson found after spending hours with it. Sonic Mania is the best case scenario that people imagine would happen when fans attempt to make something new rather than mess around with existing games.
Many of the reviews below also agree, as you’re about to see. As ever, scores are out of ten unless otherwise noted.
Here we go:
- Game Informer – 8.5
- Polygon – 7
- The Jimquisition – 9.5
- Usgamer – 4/5
- Hobby Consolas [Spanish] – 93/100

- Attack of the Fanboy – 4.5/5
- Destructoid – 8
- Push Square – 8
- IGN – 8.7
- Slant – 3/5
- Gamespot – 9
